This year, the Malaysia Day celebration (national level) is held again in Bintulu.  As a sideline attraction,  power boat and long boat races were held for two days beginning 15th September.  The race is held at the Kemena River with competitors coming as far as Brunei.  The pictures above show  a power boat race in action for 30 hp (horse power engine) tunnel boat category.

 This month of January the Wild Cinnamon trees (Cinnamomum iners) are seen flowering over many locations in Bintulu.  It is a  medium sized tree that is attractive for its orange to reddish flushes.  It is a hardy tree with a neat and compact form.  It is a popular roadside tree in Bintulu since about 30 years ago and is also suitable for green spaces areas, car parking lots and even private homes that have a sizeable garden space.  The flowers are very small and  insignificant creamy white.  They grow well in full sun and bears small berry fruits that are attractive to wildlife.

Magnificient White Poui

This April, the White Poui trees ( Tabebuia alba ) are giving out their best colours.  The very dry and hot drought  season experienced in Bintulu at this month has induced lots of the Tabebuia alba trees or commonly called White Poui to flower profusely.  The above picture is taken at Tanjung Batu, along the Pantai Temasya Drive.

Yellow Flame (Peltophorum pterocarpum)

This year (2015) the Yellow Flame started to flower profusely around Bintulu town.  These trees were planted since the mid 80's in Bintulu.  Majority were planted around the Dewan Suarah roads and  the Persiaran Pantai Temasya or the Pantai Temasya Drive especially areas near to the Taman Tumbina.

 About 10 years ago the Golden Penda was introduced into the Bintulu landscape.  Since then this medium-sized tree has been conspiciously added to many other areas of the Kidurong town as well.  The Golden Penda or Xanthostemon chrysanthus belong the family Myrataceae or the Myrtle family.  Another tree that is well used as a landscaping tree in Bintulu belonging  to the same family is the Eugenia oleina.  The masses of showy golden flowers are produced intermittently.  Here are more pictures taken in late December 2014.  In January 2015 these same trees still continue to exhibit flowering.

Final day of 10th Borneo International Kite Festival

 The 10th Borneo International Kite Festival which this year is being held at the Old Bintulu airport site ended this afternoon (28th September).  One unique feature this year is the installation of numerous arch-like kite formations giving the impression of a semi-circle tunnel when walking below them.  The installation was done on final day as part of a record-breaking event.  It is understood that next year this festival will be carried out in a bigger scale and to be included in the national tourism calendar.  Herein are pictures of the kite-flying moments....

New flushes of the Medang Tija (Cinnamomum iners) at Pantai Temasya

These "Medang Tija" tree or Wild cinnamon (Cinnamomum iners) is showing beautiful new leaves in shades of yellow to orange to red at the park area of Pantai Temasya Bintulu.

About five years ago these 'kasai' fruits were hardly seen in the markets of Bintulu.  Nowadays people in Bintulu seem to be accustomed to buying them.  They are juicy and sweet..yummy, yummy, yummy...

Ramadhan bazaars promote social intermingling

 The Ramadhan bazaars in Bintulu are unique in a special way.  They become the focus of many different ethnic groups of Sarawak to intermingle in a pleasant and harmonious atmosphere as they go out in the open to buy the many types of food, drinks  and delicacies that are abundantly available at the bazaar.  The bazaar at the Bintulu Esplanade seems to be still busy even at the last week of Ramadhan because it is situated at the heart of the Bintulu town where people of all races congregate for their daily work, leisure and shopping. These Ramadhan bazaars are normally open for business around 2.00 pm till about 6.30 pm everyday during the fasting month of Ramadhan.  The month of Ramadhan is something to be welcomed by the peoples of Bintulu, not only for the Muslims for its spiritual benefits but also other races who look forward to discover the vast selection of foods, drinks and delicacies displayed at these month-long  the temporary bazaars.

Bintulu's specialty - "Umai"

 There are two Ramadan bazaars that we visited today.  There is a  Ramadan Bazaar at the Bintulu Esplanade and another bigger one at the Assyakiriin Commmercial Centre.  The latter seemed to enjoy brisk sales because of its location some 6 kilometers away from the old town but which apparently has become a more central location due to the town's expansion to its suburb areas.  I noticed a recurrent fact as  I inquired about the prices of food sold.  Prices of all items are rising steeply which is the signs of the times as Bintulu is now in the throes of the fourth boom.

 At the Ramadan Bazaar near Assyakiriin Commercial Centre, the choice of food and drinks are plenty.  Due to the present hot weather drinks stalls were well patronised.  But if you are in Bintulu try the " Umai" which is almost synonymous with the Melanaus of Bintulu,  Umai is a kind of raw fish dish which like the Bintulu belacan or shrimp paste is a must try eating experience if you drop by this booming town.  Unlike other towns in Sarawak it is very common to see shoppers wearing coveralls because being an upcoming industrial town, Bintulu has attracted thousands of workers in all disciplines to help build and run the many industrial outfits at Kidurong and Samalaju heavy industrial zones situated north of the town.
